The Renault Clio V

DRIVE SOUTH AFRICA: The Clio V Intens takes on Muizenberg

The Renault Clio IV is a tough act to follow – in 2016 it was named the most stylish Clio ever produced. So how does the Clio 5 measure up? Spunkily for sure – but there’s always going to be a die-hard fan that doesn’t appreciate the shift in direction on the new design.

With sharper creases, hidden seamless doorhandles, chrome detailing and thinned out bonnet lines – the French are evolving with the demand for transformation – one small leap at a time.

Renault are keeping it tidy, the market place demands that of the brand known for its affordability and low fuel consumption. The new fleet have even undergone a name change, there’s Life, Zen and Intens.

WATCH VIDEO REVIEW:

Sadly, there is no automatic  model within the the new range – a feature most have become accustomed to in new releases. But then there’s the thrill of kicking back first to second, then slipping into third girl with a turbo-growl. It’s a reminder that the power is still in your hands. Another option I don’t see in other cars is an ashtray and cigarette lighter – but here it is. Do smokers genuinely still ash in their cars?

The technology will draw you back into the future – with the Multi-Sense drive mode which is an outstanding addition and allows you to customise your driving preferences. The idea is to become one with the Clio, and the 7-inch TFT display helps you do this. It has all the trappings of a high-end vehicle – rear cameras, wireless charging, lane assist, a fully functional steering wheel, cruise control, electric mirrors and seats built for total, blissful comfort.

The Clio Intens is powered by a 1-litre turbo engine that spits out 74kW  and 160NM of torque. Not the quickest off the line, but they haven’t sold millions of these cars for the speed – and I don’t see the sales slowing down either. There’s comfort and technology to keep you on the road – with exceptional safety features, what more can you ask for at a price of R349 900 for the top of the range?
