SA filmmaker cleans up at Emmys with Penguin Town

CONGRATULATIONS to South African wildlife filmmaker, Dale Hancock, who won three prestigious Emmy Awards for his Netflix documentary Penguin Town.

The 8-part series centres around the mating season of African penguins in Simons Town. They are loud, bold and proud – and sometimes hilarious.

Hancock and his team began working on the film in December 2019 but had to stop when South Africa was placed under lockdown.

Norwegian filmmaker Alex Sletten, who worked on the project with Hancock, managed to capture striking footage of the tuxedoed birds during the night and day.

The doccie highlights this dwindling species and shines a spotlight on the importance of conservation.

Hancock who was born in Pietermartizburg in KZN now lives in Howick. This is his second Emmy win, in the 2000s his work on National Geographic documentary Stalking Leopards also won an award.
