The Sardine Run

The Greatest Shoal on Earth has arrived in KwaZulu-Natal

One of the world’s most spectacular migrations – ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’ – takes place annually in June and July in KwaZulu-Natal. And it has officially arrived along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline from the South Coast all the way to Durban.

Millions of sardines swim from warmer waters along the south coast of SA to the east coast, covering a distance of over 1000kms.

WATCH

The Sardine Run dates back to 1853 and is triggered by cold water rising on the south-east coast.

Seabirds, seals, dolphins, whales and sharks follow the fish feasting on them as they travel.

Fishermen and communities wait eagerly to cast nets and pull in schools of sardines.

Sustainability has become a controversial topic for locals who make their living from selling sardines.
