What you need to know about flower season:

  1. The best flower sightings start as you head out of Cape Town on the N7 highway towards the West Coast road – look out for the acres of bright yellow canola fields on the side of the road.
  2. Wildflowers line the roads on the M19, but avoid stopping to take pictures.
  3. Postberg Nature Reserve is the ideal spot to view the flowers. It is situated within the West Coast National Park in case you are unsure of where to find it.
  4. Stay on the road while in the nature reserve. It is a protected area which means you cannot pick flowers or step on them. Respect the rules of the park.
  5. Postberg Nature Reserve is only opened to the public during the months of August and September so don’t miss these dates.
  6. Ramskop Nature Reserve in Clanwilliam is a famed spot to revel in the beauty of the flowers. Remember that the flowers close when the sun is not visible, which makes the best viewing time between 11am and 4pm.
  7. Diarise the Darling Flower show which happens in the second week of September every year. It is the oldest flower festival and the most loved.
