REEL HUMANS: Turning tragedy into a portion of hope

The Alcardo Andrews Foundation was started in honour of Avril Andrews’s son who was murdered in Hanover Park in 2015. It was a tragedy that turned into a lifeline for the poor. Since lockdown, the foundation has helped feed thousands of desperate and hungry residents of Hanover Park.

They provide as much as 1000 portions of food every day, using a container placed in a vacant plot of land. The programme is completely reliant on donations from businesses in the community, but its survival is under threat as the City of Cape Town and law enforcement threatens to remove the container, saying it violates local by-laws.

But Andrews is unmoved, saying she cannot let the poor go hungry in her community. She has promised to fight for the feeding programme to remain open despite the threat of arrest and intimidation.

You can make a donation into this account if you wish to assist.
