12 Great White Sharks spotted circling Plettenberg Bay
During an aerial survey of the Plettenberg Bay coastline on Wednesday – from Robberg to Keurboomstrand – 12 Great White Sharks were clearly visible.
Bitou Environmental Management and Plett Great White Shark Research noted ‘an incredibly healthy ecosystem’.
Large and small fish, several species of rays, dolphins and sharks were sighted.
They noted an unusually high number of Great Whites in the area for the Spring season.
Factors include:
- favourable prey in the bay
- ocean conditions and change in water temperature
- a possible delayed effect of the whale carcass recently
- sharks displaced from Mossel Bay and other areas possibly due to recent Orca predation
- increase in Orca interactions
The public are requested to only swim in designated areas while lifeguards are on duty.
